Overview: The Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) is a distinctive wrasse native to the western Atlantic Ocean, recognised by its elongated snout and bold colouration. This species is a fascinating addition to large marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and specific dietary needs, the Hogfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards smaller or similar-shaped fish. It is advisable to house Hogfish with robust tank mates and avoid keeping with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or live marine preparations. Feeding should mimic natural hunting behaviours.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and territorial nature. Provide ample hiding places with live rock and open swimming areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Hogfish may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so they are not fully reef safe.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm in the wild; aquarium specimens typically remain smaller but can reach substantial sizes requiring large tanks.
