Halichoeres hortulanus, commonly known as the Checkerboard Wrasse, is a visually stunning addition to a marine aquarium. This small wrasse is prized for its vibrant patterning and active swimming behaviour, making it a captivating fish for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a secure tank environment to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar wrasse species. Best kept singly or in a well-established community with compatible tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with specialised marine pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Halichoeres hortulanus is generally reef safe but may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. A sandy substrate is preferred as this wrasse often buries itself when resting or threatened.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches) in length.
With proper care, Halichoeres hortulanus can be a colourful and engaging member of your marine aquarium community.
