Cirrhilabrus balteatus, commonly known as the male balteatus wrasse, is a strikingly colourful fish prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its vibrant hues and peaceful temperament. Native to the Western Pacific, this species is a delightful addition to reef tanks where it can display its natural behaviours.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament: Peaceful and generally compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates. Males may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics, so it is best kept singly or in a harem with one male and multiple females.
Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: Yes – Cirrhilabrus balteatus is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow replicate their natural reef environment.
Placement: Mid to lower water column where it can swim freely and find shelter among live rock.
Origin: Western Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 8 cm (3 inches).
When introducing Cirrhilabrus balteatus to your aquarium, ensure stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Regular water changes and a well-established biological filter will support their health and longevity.
