The Bodianus mesothorax, commonly known as the Mesothorax Hogfish, is a visually stunning wrasse species prized for its vibrant orange and black coloration and dynamic swimming behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists who can provide ample space and stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Mesothorax Hogfish can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best housed with similarly sized or robust fish and is not recommended for reef tanks with small invertebrates due to potential predation.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this species thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised pellet or frozen preparations designed for wrasses.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish and should support a healthy environment without stressing the fish.
Additional Notes: This species is not considered reef safe due to its predation on small invertebrates. Careful consideration should be given to tankmates to avoid aggression and stress.
