Bodianus bilunulatus, commonly known as the Humphead Wrasse, is a visually striking marine fish prized for its vibrant colouration and dynamic behaviour. This extra large specimen is perfect for experienced aquarists with spacious tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive fish, so careful selection of tank mates is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets formulated for wrasses.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres. Due to its active swimming behaviour and potential size, a large tank with ample swimming space is recommended.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium. Ensure ample hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm in captivity.
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are critical for maintaining health. Avoid aggressive tank mates and provide a varied diet to ensure longevity and vibrant colouration.
