Apogon spp., commonly referred to as Cardinalfish, are a genus of small to medium-sized marine fish popular in the aquarium hobby for their peaceful nature and nocturnal habits. These fish are generally hardy and adapt well to captive conditions, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
Available in various sizes, Apogon spp. are best housed in well-established aquariums with stable water parameters. They prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow, mimicking their natural reef or lagoon habitats. Due to their nocturnal behaviour, they often seek shelter during daylight hours, so providing ample hiding places such as rockwork or caves is essential.
Apogon spp. are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of other marine species, including other peaceful fish and invertebrates. They are generally considered reef safe, although care should be taken when housing them with very small or delicate invertebrates.
In terms of diet, these fish are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared marine fish foods. Feeding should be done once or twice daily in small amounts to maintain optimal health.
Given the genus-level identification, conservative husbandry is recommended. A minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and stable water conditions. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality will help ensure the health and longevity of your Apogon spp.
