Pseudanthias pleurotaenia, commonly known as the Square-spot Anthias, is a strikingly colourful marine fish prized for its vibrant hues and dynamic presence in reef aquariums. The male exhibits more intense coloration and distinctive markings compared to females, making it a popular choice among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Males can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar anthias species. It is best kept singly or in a harem with one male and multiple females.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Frequent small feedings throughout the day mimic natural feeding behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 US gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting to support coral growth and enhance the fish’s vibrant colours.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef conditions without causing excessive stress.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
When introducing Pseudanthias pleurotaenia, ensure a well-established reef tank with stable water quality. Avoid housing multiple males together unless the tank is very large and can accommodate territories. This species is generally reef safe but may prey on very small invertebrates.
