Calloplesiops argus, known as the Large Basslet, is a fascinating marine fish admired for its distinctive eye-spot pattern and secretive behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide a stable environment with plenty of caves and crevices for shelter.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy. Best kept singly or as a mated pair to avoid territorial disputes.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on meaty foods such as live or frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and hiding places.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred to mimic natural reef conditions and reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef environments without causing excessive stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and overhangs to allow natural hiding and resting behaviour. Position away from aggressive tank mates.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and very small fish. Careful consideration should be given when housing with delicate reef inhabitants.
