Hemitaurichthys polylepis, commonly known as the Pyramid Butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. This species is admired for its distinctive triangular white patches contrasted against a deep blue body, making it a visually stunning inhabitant.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, Hemitaurichthys polylepis coexists well with other non-territorial fish. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised herbivore preparations to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow replicates natural reef environments and supports health.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the tank, where it can swim freely and access food easily.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches) in length.
Due to its specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, it is recommended for aquarists with some experience in marine fish care. Regular monitoring and maintenance of water parameters will ensure a thriving specimen.
