Chelmon marginalis is a visually stunning butterflyfish species prized for its bold vertical bands and graceful movements. This large variant can reach a considerable size, making it a focal point in a suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards similar species. Best kept singly or as a pair in large tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting & Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Avoid aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates. Careful monitoring is advised when introducing to reef aquaria.
