Chaetodon xanthurus, or the Pearlscale Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body adorned with pearl-like white spots and a distinctive black eye band. This species is native to the western Indian Ocean and is a popular choice for experienced marine aquarists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This butterflyfish requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches).
Due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity, the Pearlscale Butterflyfish is best suited for aquarists with some marine experience. Regular monitoring of water quality and diet is essential to maintain health and vibrancy.
