The Chaetodon triangulum, commonly known as the Triangle Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique triangular patterns and vibrant colours. This large butterflyfish is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs and dietary preferences.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. It is recommended to keep this fish singly or as a mated pair in a well-established community tank. Avoid housing with aggressive or overly boisterous tank mates.
Diet: This species primarily feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including specialised frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine preparations enriched with vitamins. Supplement with high-quality marine flakes and pellets designed for butterflyfish. Regular feeding multiple times a day is advised to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock to offer natural grazing opportunities and hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to support this species’ sensitivity.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Due to its natural diet including coral polyps, it may nip at or damage corals and sessile invertebrates. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-soft-coral reef setups where coral predation risk is minimal.
