The Ornate Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ornatissimus) is a visually captivating species prized for its elaborate black and white patterning and elegant swimming behaviour. This butterflyfish is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature reef tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for coral polyps, small invertebrates, and specialised prepared foods. Supplement diet with meaty marine fare and high-quality frozen foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so suitable only for well-established reef tanks with robust coral species.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of hiding spots and live rock for grazing.
