Chaetodon ocellatus, commonly known as the Ocellated Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive eye-spot marking and elegant body shape. This small butterflyfish reaches approximately 12 cm in length and is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with other peaceful fish. Avoid aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement diet with algae and coral polyps if available.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. A well-established tank with abundant live rock is essential for grazing and hiding.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Additional Notes: Regular observation is advised to ensure dietary needs are met and to monitor for signs of stress or disease. Quarantine new specimens before introduction.
