Chaetodon melannotus, commonly known as the Blackback Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive black and yellow markings. This large butterflyfish is best suited for experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its specialised care requirements.
Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This species demands stable water conditions and a carefully managed diet.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar butterflyfish species. Suitable tank mates include peaceful community fish.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure tank layout allows for open swimming areas.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
