The Chaetodon lineolatus, commonly known as the Lined Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its elegant linear markings and graceful swimming behaviour. This medium-sized butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive fish but should not be housed with overly aggressive tank mates. Suitable for reef aquariums with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to replicate natural conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, where it can swim freely and access feeding areas.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Providing a well-established tank with live rock and hiding places will help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Regular water changes and careful monitoring of water parameters are essential for long-term health.
