The Chaetodon declivis, commonly known as the large butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium. Recognised for its bold patterns and vibrant colours, this species demands careful husbandry and a well-established tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: This butterflyfish is generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar-shaped species. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in a large aquarium. Compatibility with other peaceful fish is usually good, but caution is advised when housing with aggressive or highly territorial species.
Diet: Chaetodon declivis requires a varied diet consisting of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Regular feeding multiple times a day is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 200 litres is advised. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock to provide grazing opportunities and hiding places. Stable water parameters and excellent water quality are essential for this species.
Care Level: This species is suited to advanced marine aquarists familiar with the specific needs of butterflyfish, including their dietary and environmental requirements.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Chaetodon declivis may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so monitoring is essential if kept in reef systems.
