Chaetodon declivis, commonly referred to as the Chevron Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique chevron markings and elegant swimming behaviour. This small butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets designed for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural grazing behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow suit this species well, replicating its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid aggressive tank mates and overcrowding.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches).
Due to its specialised care requirements, Chaetodon declivis is recommended for aquarists with prior experience in maintaining butterflyfish and stable marine systems.
