The Collared Butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare) is a visually captivating species prized for its bold black collar marking and contrasting colouration. This large butterflyfish can grow up to approximately 20 cm in length, making it a standout addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped butterflyfish. It is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous – requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain stable water parameters.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 SG.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow replicate natural reef environments and support overall health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
With proper care, the Collared Butterflyfish can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
