The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a spectacular giant clam species prized for its brilliant yellow-gold mantle and compact size, reaching approximately 14cm. This clam is a popular choice for marine reef aquarists seeking a visually striking invertebrate that contributes to the biodiversity and aesthetic of their tank.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some experience in maintaining stable reef conditions.
Feeding and Nutrition: Tridacna maxima clams primarily rely on photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their mantles for nutrition. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health, especially in lower light conditions.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic algae. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide strong PAR values are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to ensure adequate gas exchange and nutrient delivery without causing mantle damage.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam bases in the well-lit upper to mid-levels of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. Generally compatible with peaceful reef inhabitants but avoid housing with predatory or aggressive fish species. The clam’s delicate mantle is vulnerable to damage from certain fish and invertebrates.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres (approximately 25 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide sufficient space.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
With proper care, the Yellow-Gold Tridacna maxima clam can be a long-lived and captivating addition to your marine reef aquarium.
