The Tridacna maxima (Blue) Ultra is a captivating small giant clam species prized for its brilliant blue mantle and intricate patterning. Originating from the Pacific, this clam reaches around 5cm in size, making it a perfect addition to mature reef tanks.
Care Requirements: This clam requires moderate to strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutrition. Stable water parameters and calcium supplementation are essential for healthy shell growth. Moderate water flow is preferred to prevent sediment accumulation on the mantle while avoiding direct strong currents that can stress the clam.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, Tridacna maxima can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility: This species is reef safe and generally peaceful, but care should be taken to avoid placing it near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle. Provide adequate space to prevent damage from neighbouring invertebrates or corals.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable rock or sandy substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water parameters to reduce stress.
With proper care, the Blue Ultra Tridacna maxima clam can be a vibrant and long-lasting highlight in your marine aquarium.
