The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a captivating and colourful giant clam species prized in the marine aquarium hobby. This Ultra Pacific variant, approximately 12cm in size, displays vibrant blue hues that add a striking focal point to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This clam requires stable, mature reef aquarium conditions with strong lighting and clean water.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam bases in the lower to middle sections of the aquarium where it receives ample light but is protected from direct strong currents.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip or disturb the clam’s mantle. It coexists well with peaceful reef inhabitants.
Origin: Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15cm in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide adequate space.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential to support shell growth and overall health. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
