The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually striking giant clam species prized for its brilliant blue mantle and intricate patterns. At approximately 15cm, this clam is a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and adequate lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can enhance growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide is essential to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect flow is preferred to prevent mantle damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable, well-lit substrate or rockwork in the lower to middle sections of the aquarium. Avoid areas with strong direct currents.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful but avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip or disturb the clam.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to maintain stable water quality and accommodate growth.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell development. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters.
