The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually stunning bivalve mollusc prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its vibrant mantle patterns and natural filtration capabilities. At approximately 15cm, this clam is suitable for well-established reef tanks and adds both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.
Care and Husbandry: This species requires strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Moderate to strong water flow is ideal to ensure proper gas exchange and waste removal, but avoid direct, forceful currents that may stress the clam.
Placement should be on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where the clam can securely attach itself. Ensure it is positioned where it receives ample light but is protected from aggressive tank mates. The Black Tiger Clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health, especially in lower light conditions.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support shell growth.
With proper care, the Black Tiger Clam can thrive and become a captivating focal point in your marine aquarium.
