Amblygobius decussatus is a charming goby species prized for its unique cross-hatched pattern and active sand-sifting behaviour. This fish is an excellent addition to peaceful marine community tanks, where it helps maintain substrate cleanliness by sifting through the sand bed in search of food.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank with a sandy substrate.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, Amblygobius decussatus coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates. It may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar gobies, so housing a single individual or a mated pair is recommended.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with quality marine flakes or pellets. Their natural sand-sifting behaviour means they will also consume detritus and microfauna from the substrate.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for foraging and territory establishment.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide a sandy substrate with plenty of live rock for shelter and foraging. Ensure the sand bed is deep enough (at least 5cm) to allow natural sand-sifting behaviour.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 10 cm (4 inches).
Reef Safe: Yes. This species is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
