Favia spp. are a genus of large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their distinctive, brain-like appearance and vibrant colours. This premium medium-sized specimen is an excellent addition to any reef aquarium, offering both aesthetic appeal and relative hardiness.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to support healthy growth without causing stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with a PAR range of approximately 50-150 are ideal.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow helps maintain coral health by preventing detritus accumulation while avoiding tissue damage.
Placement: Position the coral on stable rockwork in the middle to lower sections of the tank. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as Favia spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate hobbyists due to its moderate care requirements. Regular monitoring of water parameters and stable conditions are essential.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing to prevent coral warfare.
Additional Notes: Origin and maximum size vary among species within the genus; therefore, conservative husbandry practices are advised. Maintain stable water chemistry with parameters typical for reef tanks: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
