Heliofungia actiniformis, commonly known as the mushroom coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its striking purple colour and unique free-living growth form. This extra large Grade B specimen offers a dramatic focal point for mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant coloration without causing bleaching. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Provide low to moderate, indirect water flow to ensure the coral’s tentacles can extend fully without damage. Avoid strong currents that may cause tissue injury.
Placement: Place on sandy or rubble substrate where it can rest freely, as Heliofungia actiniformis is a free-living coral. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and allow full expansion.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral feeds to promote growth and health.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Additional Notes: This coral is not tank-bred and may require acclimation to aquarium conditions. Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef tanks: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
