Heliofungia actiniformis, commonly known as the Plate Coral or Actiniform Coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant purple colour and distinctive long tentacles that resemble sea anemones.
This Grade B specimen is a large-sized coral, suitable for marine reef aquariums maintained by intermediate to advanced hobbyists. Its unique appearance and behaviour make it a standout addition to any reef tank.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum will support healthy growth without causing bleaching.
- Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal to ensure the coral’s tentacles can extend fully without damage. Avoid strong currents that may cause tissue injury.
- Placement: Place on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it to prevent aggression or stinging of neighbouring corals. This species can extend long tentacles and requires room to expand.
- Diet: While primarily photosynthetic, Heliofungia actiniformis benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Additional Information
This coral originates from Indo-Pacific reef regions. It can reach a diameter of up to 30 cm in captivity under optimal conditions. A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water parameters.
Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels, will support healthy skeletal growth and vibrant coloration.
