The Sixband Sergeant (Abudefduf sexfasciatus) is a popular damselfish species known for its striking pattern of six vertical black bands on a pale body, making it a colourful and dynamic addition to marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species thrives in reef environments and displays active swimming behaviour.
Care Level: Easy to moderate care requirements make this fish suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience. It is hardy but benefits from stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sixband Sergeant is semi-aggressive, typical of damselfish, and may defend its territory vigorously. It is best kept with other robust species and avoided with very passive or slow-moving fish. Compatibility with corals is generally good, but caution is advised as it may nip at polyps.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure optimal health and colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish active and healthy.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment. Position the fish in the mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
