Scolymia australis, commonly known as the Bleeding Apple coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant colours and fleshy, rounded appearance. This medium-sized specimen is perfect for marine aquarium enthusiasts looking to add a striking focal point to their reef setup.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, ideally using LED or T5 fixtures that provide a balanced spectrum. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is best to ensure the coral’s delicate tissues are not damaged while still providing adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the coral on the substrate or lower rockwork with enough space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. Scolymia australis can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10-15 cm clearance.
Diet: While photosynthetic, this coral benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week to promote growth and vibrant colouration.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive or fast-growing corals that may overshadow or sting it.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable water parameters and lighting.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef tanks: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.025, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
