Overview: The Zebrasoma xanthurum, or Purple Tang, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its vibrant purple body and yellow tail. Tank-bred specimens are preferred for sustainable aquarium keeping and better acclimation to captive conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and ample swimming space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. Suitable tank mates include other tangs and peaceful community fish, but care should be taken to avoid housing with similarly shaped tangs to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty foods can be offered to supplement nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals.
Origin: Native to the northwestern Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm in length.
Additional Notes: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential for health.
