The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is one of the most recognisable and admired marine fish in the aquarium hobby. Its elegant shape and bold colouration make it a standout addition to large, well-established reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: This species is considered challenging to keep due to its specialised diet and sensitivity to water quality. It is best suited for experienced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped butterflyfish. It coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Moorish Idols are omnivorous with a preference for sponges, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen or prepared foods formulated for spongivores, supplemented with marine algae and occasional live foods.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their active swimming behaviour and size, a minimum tank volume of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow replicate their natural reef environment. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure a mature, stable aquarium environment before introducing this species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 23 cm (9 inches) in length.
