Variola louti, commonly called the Lyretail Grouper, is a visually impressive marine fish prized by advanced hobbyists for its vibrant colours and distinctive lyre-shaped tail. This small variant is ideal for marine aquariums with sufficient space and stable water conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Variola louti requires attentive husbandry and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. This species can be territorial, especially towards smaller or similarly sized fish. It is best kept with robust tank mates that can tolerate its assertive nature.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality frozen or live marine preparations. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons). A large aquarium with ample swimming space and hiding spots is essential to accommodate its active behaviour and territorial needs.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs are required beyond what supports a healthy reef environment.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef conditions and ensure good oxygenation.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter. Position the fish in a central area of the tank where it can establish territory but avoid overcrowding.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: No. Variola louti preys on smaller fish and invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef tanks with vulnerable species.
