Symphyllia spp. (Orange-Red) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant orange-red hues and distinctive fleshy polyps. This medium-sized specimen belongs to the Mussidae family, known for their robust skeletal structure and striking appearance.
These corals thrive best under moderate lighting conditions, such as T5 fluorescents or LED setups providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching. Moderate, gentle water flow is ideal to facilitate nutrient exchange without damaging the delicate polyps.
Placement should be on a stable substrate or rockwork in the lower to middle sections of the aquarium to balance light exposure and flow. Symphyllia spp. require adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as they possess sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby specimens.
Feeding is beneficial to promote growth and vibrancy; offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week. Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and low nutrient levels to support optimal health.
This premium medium-sized coral is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry. Its moderate care level and striking appearance make it a prized addition to reef tanks.
