The Blue Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla spp.) is a captivating invertebrate known for its vibrant blue colouring and expansive oral disc. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements and potential interactions with tank inhabitants.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. These anemones require stable water parameters and mature aquariums to thrive.
Feeding: While capable of photosynthesis through their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they benefit from supplemental feeding. Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, or specialised anemone pellets 1-2 times weekly.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safety is classified as With Caution. The Blue Carpet Anemone can sting neighbouring corals and may prey on small fish or invertebrates. It is best housed in fish-only or mixed reef tanks with caution and adequate space.
Placement and Environment: Provide moderate to strong lighting to support their photosynthetic needs, ideally using LED or T5 lighting systems. Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure nutrient exchange without causing tissue damage. Position the anemone on a sandy or rubble substrate where it can anchor its foot securely.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its growth and movement.
Additional Notes: Ensure stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and low nutrient levels. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
