Overview: Scorpaena spp., commonly known as scorpionfish, are a genus of venomous marine fish prized for their intricate camouflage and distinctive appearance. The large variant is suitable for experienced hobbyists due to their specialised care needs and venomous spines.
Temperament and Compatibility: These fish are generally solitary and territorial. They can be aggressive towards smaller tankmates and should be housed with similarly sized or larger species. Avoid keeping with very small or slow-moving fish to prevent predation.
Diet: Scorpaena spp. are carnivorous ambush predators. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other marine protein sources. Feeding should be done carefully to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended for large specimens to provide adequate swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock or hiding places to mimic their natural environment and reduce stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Handling and Safety: Exercise caution when handling or maintaining the tank, as Scorpaena spp. possess venomous spines that can cause painful injuries. Use appropriate tools and protective gloves.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. These fish may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so they are not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small or slow-moving inhabitants.
