Scolymia australis, commonly known as the War Paint coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid colours and unique patterns. This medium-sized Grade B specimen offers an excellent addition to your marine reef aquarium, showcasing the characteristic fleshy polyps and striking colouration that make this species popular among hobbyists.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for Scolymia australis. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a PAR range of approximately 50-150 µmol/m²/s support healthy growth without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is recommended. Too strong a current can cause the polyps to retract and inhibit feeding, while gentle flow helps maintain cleanliness and nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position this coral on the substrate or lower rockwork where it can expand fully without competition. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression, as Scolymia australis can extend sweeper tentacles.
Diet: While primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week promotes vibrant colour and growth.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. This coral is generally peaceful but requires room to prevent stinging adjacent corals.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature around 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels for optimal health.
