Scolymia australis (Ufo) is a striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral from the Mussidae family, renowned for its bold colours and distinctive, rounded shape reminiscent of a UFO. This extra large specimen makes a captivating centrepiece in mature reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colours without causing stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is ideal to ensure the coral’s delicate tissues are not damaged while still providing adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position this coral on the substrate or lower rockwork with sufficient space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. It is best placed away from fast-flowing areas.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and regular monitoring.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing due to its potential to extend sweeper tentacles and compete for space.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support skeletal growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or flow to prevent bleaching or tissue recession.
