Scleronephthya spp. are a genus of soft leather corals prized for their striking appearance and delicate polyps. These corals add vibrant colour and texture to mature reef tanks but require careful husbandry to flourish.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to prevent bleaching and stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to ensure polyps can extend fully without damage.
Placement: Position these corals in shaded or semi-shaded areas of the aquarium, avoiding direct intense light. Provide adequate spacing from aggressive neighbours to prevent stinging or overgrowth.
Diet: While photosynthetic, Scleronephthya spp. benefit from supplemental feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral feeds.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or species that may nip at soft tissues.
Due to their sensitivity, these corals are best suited to experienced aquarists with stable water parameters and mature reef systems.
