Prionurus chrysurus is a distinctive tang species prized for its unique body shape and vibrant colouring. This medium-sized surgeonfish is a robust addition to larger marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and active behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Prionurus chrysurus coexists well with other tangs and similarly sized fish. It is best housed with non-aggressive tankmates to avoid territorial disputes. This species is considered reef safe, making it suitable for reef aquariums when provided with adequate space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming nature and size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample swimming space with live rock for grazing and hiding.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Moderate lighting is suitable, replicating natural reef environments.
Origin and Size: Native to the eastern Pacific, Prionurus chrysurus reaches a maximum size of approximately 25 cm in captivity.
