Plerogyra sinuosa, commonly referred to as Bubble Coral, is a visually striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its unique bubble-like vesicles that expand and contract with water flow. This Tiny variant is perfect for hobbyists looking to add texture and movement to their reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal to allow the bubbles to expand fully without causing tissue damage. Too strong a current can stress the coral and inhibit polyp extension.
Placement: Position Plerogyra sinuosa in a shaded or semi-shaded area of the reef tank, preferably on a stable rock base with enough space to prevent contact with neighbouring corals. This species requires adequate spacing due to its sweeper tentacles and potential for aggressive interactions.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals to avoid aggression. Not aggressive towards fish or invertebrates but may sting nearby corals.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature around 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and low nutrient levels. Regular calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium supplementation will support skeletal growth.
