Plerogyra sinuosa, commonly referred to as Bubble Coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral from the family Euphyllidae. Its unique inflated vesicles give it a distinctive appearance, making it a popular choice for marine aquarists seeking texture and movement in their reef tanks.
Lighting: This species thrives under moderate lighting conditions. Avoid intense direct light as it may cause bleaching or stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity are ideal.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is recommended to prevent damage to the delicate vesicles while ensuring adequate gas exchange and nutrient delivery.
Placement: Position Plerogyra sinuosa in a low to mid-level area of the aquarium where it can expand fully without interference. Ensure ample space around it to prevent aggression or stinging of neighbouring corals, as it can extend sweeper tentacles at night.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate aquarists familiar with LPS coral husbandry. Maintain stable water parameters with regular testing and water changes.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals. Avoid placing near aggressive species or fast-growing SPS corals that may overshadow it.
Feeding: While Plerogyra sinuosa can derive nutrition from photosynthesis via its symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods can promote growth and vibrancy.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support skeletal growth.
