The Plectorhinchus lineatus, or Medium Sweetlips, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its unique striped pattern and gentle nature. Native to tropical Indo-Pacific waters, this species is a popular choice among experienced marine aquarists seeking a peaceful yet impressive addition to their collection.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and specific dietary needs. This species thrives best in well-established, mature aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Medium Sweetlips coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish, as it may inadvertently outcompete them for food.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, it requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is advised to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and adult size. Provide ample hiding places and open swimming areas.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to ensure good oxygenation without stressing the fish.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium are preferred, where it can forage comfortably.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may prey on smaller invertebrates or disturb delicate corals.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in length.
