Platygyra spp. are prized large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the Faviidae family, known for their distinctive maze-like skeletal patterns and vibrant colours. This premium large specimen is ideal for marine aquarists looking to add texture and visual interest to their reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support photosynthesis by their symbiotic zooxanthellae. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 100-250 µmol/m²/s are suitable.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is best to ensure adequate nutrient delivery and waste removal without causing tissue damage. Avoid strong direct currents that can stress the coral.
Placement: Position this coral on stable rockwork in the middle to lower sections of the aquarium to balance light exposure and water movement. Ensure sufficient space around the colony to prevent aggression with neighbouring corals, as Platygyra spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals. It may exhibit aggressive behaviour towards nearby corals if placed too close.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Due to the genus-level identification (spp.), care recommendations are conservative to accommodate potential species variation. This coral is suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists familiar with LPS coral husbandry.
