The Orbicular Batfish (Platax orbicularis) is a captivating species known for its distinctive disc-shaped body and graceful swimming style. This tank-bred medium specimen offers a sustainable and hardy option for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a visually impressive addition.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Orbicular Batfish requires stable water conditions and a spacious tank to accommodate its potential growth and active swimming behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy or timid. Best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with very small or highly aggressive species to prevent stress or injury.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as marine algae or spirulina flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to encourage natural behaviour without causing stress.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of open swimming space and some sheltered areas or rockwork for retreat.
Origin: Not Provided (Tank-Bred specimen).
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at small invertebrates or sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
