Physogyra lichtensteini, commonly known as Bubble Coral, is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its distinctive inflated, bubble-like tentacles that create a fascinating texture and movement within the aquarium. Originating from Indo-Pacific reef environments, this species adds both colour and dynamic form to mature reef systems.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain optimal health and vibrant colours. Too intense lighting may cause bleaching, while insufficient light can reduce polyp expansion.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is ideal. Strong currents can damage the delicate bubble polyps, whereas gentle flow helps prevent detritus accumulation and promotes gas exchange.
Placement: Position Physogyra lichtensteini on a stable substrate or rockwork with enough space to accommodate its expanding bubbles. Ensure it is not placed too close to aggressive corals to avoid stinging or damage.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. It can coexist with most peaceful corals and invertebrates but should be kept away from fast-growing or aggressive species that may overshadow or harm it.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic through its symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods can enhance growth and polyp extension.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and attentive husbandry to thrive.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential for skeletal growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or flow to prevent stress.
