Paracheilinus mccoskeri, commonly known as McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse, is a stunningly colourful wrasse species prized by marine aquarium hobbyists for its vibrant display and active behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced keepers due to its specific care requirements and sensitivity.
McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is a relatively small fish, reaching a maximum size of approximately 6 cm (2.4 inches). It thrives in well-established reef aquariums with a minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Temperamentally, this wrasse is peaceful but can be shy initially. It is compatible with other peaceful fish species but should not be housed with aggressive or overly territorial tank mates. It is reef safe, making it suitable for reef setups, although caution is advised around very small invertebrates.
Diet should consist of a varied selection of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality frozen or live preparations. Feeding multiple times daily in small amounts helps mimic their natural feeding behaviour and supports their health.
Provide moderate lighting and moderate water flow to replicate their natural habitat. The tank should include plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging, as well as open swimming areas.
Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is a captivating addition to marine aquaria, especially for those seeking a colourful and active wrasse species.
