The Spotted Wobbegong Shark (Orectolobus maculatus) is a fascinating species native to Australian waters, known for its distinctive mottled pattern and flattened body adapted for a benthic lifestyle. This shark is a nocturnal predator that spends much of its time resting on the substrate, camouflaged among rocks and coral.
Care Level: Due to its specialised requirements and size potential, the Spotted Wobbegong is recommended for advanced marine aquarists with experience in shark husbandry.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 600 litres is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and a naturalistic environment with ample hiding spots such as caves and overhangs. The substrate should be soft sand or fine gravel to protect the shark’s delicate skin.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but predatory, this species should be housed with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous, feeding primarily on meaty foods such as fish, squid, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week, with care taken to ensure a varied diet to maintain health.
Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and good water quality are essential. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural habitats.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may prey on small reef inhabitants, so not recommended for reef tanks with small fish or invertebrates.
