Ophioderma squamosissima is a species of brittle star prized for its unique appearance and interesting behaviour in marine aquariums. As a member of the brittle star family, it is an excellent addition to reef tanks and mixed invertebrate setups.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Feeding: Ophioderma squamosissima is primarily a detritivore and scavenger. It benefits from supplemental feeding with finely chopped meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised invertebrate pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week to maintain health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This brittle star is generally peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It coexists well with other invertebrates and fish but avoid housing with aggressive predators that may harm it.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure oxygenation without stressing the brittle star. Lighting requirements are not critical but moderate lighting mimicking natural reef conditions is preferred.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock or substrate for hiding and foraging. Ophioderma squamosissima often shelters under rocks or within crevices during the day and emerges at night.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 10 cm arm span.
