The Odonus niger, or Blue Throat Triggerfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its electric blue throat and sleek body. This medium-sized triggerfish is best suited to larger marine aquariums due to its active swimming habits and territorial nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other triggerfish or similar-shaped species. Compatibility with other robust fish is possible but caution is advised.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and territory establishment.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically destructive to corals, it may nip at invertebrates or small fish, so it is not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef currents.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in length.
